My instant messages were just not going thru to my contact. i know for a fact that he was online. Also he could see my status as "offline" when it should have been online.i have skype version 4.2.0.169
If both of you are online and can't see each other, and your messages are not going through, try calling your contact Skype to Skype to get the message through. I don't know the exact explanation behind it, but that's what we often do and it works.
