My JVC 27" tv won't show subtitle. Is there any way to get it to come on? It looks like we have it turned on with the remote, but then it doesn't work

Do you mean closed caption? Sub title on/off control is on the DVD player.
Check any TV channel to see whether the Closed Caption works? There should be a CC switch on the remote or there should be a CC on/off command from the TV menu.
