My key wont turn in the initiation
I got in and tried to turn the key but nothing happened the lights in the car will not come on and i was told i need a new steering column but i was told to start the car, disconnect the negative and wait and reconnect ? is this correct

Before spending big money, get a multi-meter (under $14 and no vehicle should be without one) and test the voltage across the battery terminals. It should be 12.4 or higher. If it isn't, get a new battery. If the voltage is OK, remove and abrade the battery terminals then make sure they are TIGHT when reconnecting them. You should now have lights and hopefully ignition also.
