First, if you're using a version of Microsoft Windows, right click "My Computer" and in the menu, click "Manage"... On the left hand side you should see "Disk Management"... Click on that and give it a few moments... If it pops up there, you're doing good so far... It will give you some details about your drive, if it's healthy or not, partitioned/formatted or not etc... You'll probably have to format it to have it work and show up on your computer. Hopefully, it's not broken! I hate buying used parts that are broken...
