A rattle sound could mean a simple fix - or a big problem if other parts have fallen or loosened and caused damage to moving parts or optics. AF lenses are precision optical devices, with many small parts and components, not unlike an expensive watch. Additionally, they are usually worked in a "clean room" so that dust and other contaminants can't interfere with the movement of the optics motors and associated parts. Oils on fingers can gum up aperture blades and cause additional problems "down the road" too.
The short answer is to not attempt dis-assembly. Leave this work for a pro repair - or consider purchasing a replacement. You should ask if Ritz will apply the $150 towards repair, or if that is strictly the charge to open it and diagnose the problem. Ask about what type of warranty comes with the repair, too.
I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.
Thanks Steve. It worked fine, then AF got slow, and I coudn't zoom back in. Ritz said it would be $150 to open it and look. I can find new ones for less on ebay. My dad had the same lens, and his did the same thing. I am hoping to find someone that this has happened to......seems like it would be common. Thanks again. Thanks Steve. Make sure if the lens has a macro switch on it that it is turned off. Other than that i agree with the other answer.
