If both the hard drive and DVD are not recognized then you're facing a motherboard issue. This is a common problem unfortunately. The chip that controls the operation of the DVD, hard drive, and all other peripherals (keyboard, mouse, USB ports...) is prone to lose contact with the motherboard. To repair this problem you'll either have to get a new motherboard, or repair the one you have. Here's a great tutorial for repairing laptop motherboards with FSB controller issue. The tutorial is for a HP laptop but the principle is exactly the same.
