Take the cartridge out. Then put it back in. Make sure it is seated properly. If this does not work you probably have another color that is ALSO out that needs to be replaced. On my Brother printer, it will report the first color as out, and STAY with that color even after it is replaced. There is always a second cartridge that is also out.
Take out and reinsert the other cartridges. Let the printer look for them for about 2 minutes. Then turn off everything wait 30 seconds and turn everything back on including the computer.
While you have the cartridges OUT feel them and shake them. Empty ones will be apparent to you.
Then try these two steps:
Take out and reinsert the other cartridges. Let the printer look for them for about 2 minutes. Then turn off everything wait 30 seconds and turn everything back on including the computer.
While you have the cartridges OUT feel them and shake them. Empty ones will be apparent to you.

Also check the bottom of the BLACK cartridge and make sure the contacts are all OK. Sometimes they get bent, broken, and in some cases folded over.
