Ah yes. You, or rather your Roomba is experiencing what is commonly referred to as the "Roomba Circle Dance". This is caused by the a sensor called the "Optical Encoder". The image is a before and after cleaning of this sensor. This will reoccur depending on how much it is used and the intervals can shorten between sensor cleanings. There are a couple other options, and a lot depends on what model you have, you have. These involve an upgrade to your Roomba that will allow you to change the parameters on the sensors. Basically it enables you to make the sensor's less sensitive to dust and dirt. The other option is to send it in for repairs or just a good cleaning. The link below will take you to a site that can help with servicing and the upgrades. If you are game I can provide instructions on it's dis-assembly and cleaning. Just let me know. On a repair project scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 6 or 7 depending on the model. I really hope this helps.
I am sorry that it took this long to respond but there was a death in my family and It's kept me pretty busy. I have done a bit of digging with regards to your best option. I know you said you would like to fix it yourself however, i guess, fix isn't the right word. Maintain fits it better because thats what your going to have to do every couple weeks once the circle dance has started.
I don't think you want to tear into it that much. Check out the OSMO/hacker. It will give you the chance to work on it and install a tool that will help eliminate some of the grief as well as improve it's performance.
Let me know what you think. about this option. If your still set on doing it all your self I will pass on the instructions first chance I get.
