Try an external monitor - connect it to the VGA output, enable the external monitor mode, and see if you get a display. If you do, there is a problem in the display - either a bad inverter or the backlight is out if you have a CCFL lamp. If you have an LED (does not use CCFL or inverter) display, the display itself is bad.
