My SD card is full (only 8 gb) and when I drag the contents onto my desktop, nothing appears on the card but the camera says it's still full. I'm using a Mac, and I've been told I have to re-format the card but I am unsure on how to do that

Instead of dragging the contents of the SD card, use the "Cut" or "Move" command instead. It should remove the file from the SD and re-formating will not be necessary.
