My SmartDisk FireLite external hard drive is showing 33 GB free out of 55 GB. I had all of my and my wife's files stored on it, but now it only shows all of our folders as shortcuts and says the item the shortcut refers to has been changed or moved. How can I recover my data?

I believe some virus caught your computer. If you can't find you're files try this.
-Go to that hard disk.
-In the menu bar look for tools.
-Folder option
-In the folder option window click view
-look for hidden files and folders
-In the 2 radio buttons click show hidden files and folders
-click apply.
If this is correct there is a way to remove those hidden things.
-Select the file or folder you wish to not hide.
-right click and look for properties
-unchecked hidden files and apply
