The battery can be replaced. There is a single AA NiCd battery w/ tabs soldered into the main circuit board. To open up the trimmer, first take the silver screw out (located near the lower back side). Then pull the trim guard off the top (should come off easily). Next, the rubber-like ring used for adjusting the trim height needs to be pulled off -- this can be difficult but just work your way around and ease it off. Finally, the metal clip on the end of the trimming head needs to be removed, and the plasic case can then be popped open, revealing the circuit board.
If you're not comfortable soldering or disassembling it, it can likely be done at a local Batteries Plus store.
