The side cover can be removed with a torx size 15 wrench. Looking down on the machine, you will see a small hole opening in the middle of the machine almost to the left edge-see pic (the top lid covers needs to be up to see it) and loosen the screw 3 turns. That side cover will slide off to the left now and you can access your thread. To take the thread out, turn the hand wheel backwards (to the back) while pulling on the thread.
