I would agree with mjjdesigns. You will likely need to get a cable card, which luckily the Tivo supports to receive the HD signal. Your Tivo may be able to receive the channels without the Card, though I have found that they are often mapped to funny places, for instance on my network, Channel 3 which reports as cable channel 403 with the CableCARD, shows up as 84-3 on the TV and Tivo if not tuing through the CableCARD.

It is possible that you think that you are getting an HD signal through the TV just becuase it is showing up in the 16:9 format. Unless you are tuning to an HD channel (such as 3-1 or 5-1) it is standard definition being stretched to fit your screen. Your Tivo can do this to by pressing the Aspect button on your remote, but it still won't be HD.

Also, if you do get a CableCARD from the cable company, be sure to ask for a multi stream card so that you only need one card and can tune to cable channels on both tuners. Also, I know that the cable companies have often had significant trouble getting CableCARDS to work with the Tivo. Be patient, it is often the Cable Co's fault but they typically pass the buck first to Tivo. Tivo has a hotline established for the sole purpose of working with the Cable Companies to make the cards work in their devices. If you wind up in the situation, call Tivo Customer Service and ask for this hotline.

As far as I know, you need the cable cards to get HD through the Tivo, because they're what does the HD decoding and output.
