Are you sure that your starter is spinning? Take the starter out and if possible leave the wires connected and make sure that it spinning freely. Next is to see if you can turn the flywheel manually by prying it with a screwdriver or pry bar to make sure nothing is locked up in the motor. If the starter engages and you can get the motor to turn over then it is most likely a relay or a solenoid. In very rare occasions I have gotten a starter that had the engaging shift and gear that was either too long or too short to engage the flywheel or the teeth did not match the teeth on the flywheel. You may have shim the starter if it's too long or get another one and see if it's longer shorter or has more or less teeth on it depending on what you need for your vehicle. Hope this helps.
You say your starter is kicking in..is it spinning and not turning the engine over? If so you have a problem with the flywheel teeth or starter gears not engaging..if no spin just a click..your battery is to weak to turn engine or you starter selonoid or starter needs replaced...good luck..
