The controller cable is made so that it snaps into place on both the headset end and the controller end as well. If you don't push it in all the way, it can cause a mic issue. If you are sure it's plugged in correctly and you are still having a problem, just contact Turtle Beach's customer service department and they will send you a new one for free if the headset is under warranty. (They have a 1 year warranty).
