Smells are usually from bacteria. I have seen this before and you can get O.K results by rinsing the machine with cleaning soloution. I like ****-n-span. try to use a cleaner that you like the smell of as it will leave a little of that smell behind. use the vacum in the wet type aplication and use it to **** up the cleaning solution mixed with warm water with about the same mix as you would use to clean a floor. then after the machine fills up let the cleaning solution set in there for 5 to 15 minutes. dump out the cleaning soloution and repeat the process with clean warm water. If it has gotten really bad then you made need to repeat the entire process one or two more times. I also take the pick up hose and clean it with some cleaning solution then rinse outside with a water hose.
