External harddrive are plug n play devices. Your computer should be able to detect it right away when you plugged it in. Check at the computer management if the computer were able to detect the drive. Click start menu the right click computer then select manage. Go to disk management then see if you have your external harddrive detected there. If there's none, try to plug in the drive to other usb port.
