My watch seems to collect black particles between links. Is this a residue of the metals? How can I prevent? It is staining my sleeves!

I have this sort of problem with all my expanding bracelet watches.
It seems to be a natural collecting place for dirt and regular cleaning with a cotton bud or similar small probe is the only answer to the problem that I have come across.
