Computers & Internet - Linksys - Wireless-G WRT54G Router
Ok, don't panic... here's what to do. On the back of the router you should see a reset button. It will be a little hole that you need to put a paperclip in to push it. Power the router on, push the reset button and hold it until you see the routers lights flash (About 10 seconds usually does the trick) Once you have done this, the router will be back to it's factory settings. Now, pen Internet exploer, in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 if this doesnt work try 192.168.0.1 it's usually one of these....by default the user name and password are "admin" ( Without the quotes) and "password" ( Without the quotes) Now you should be into the router. If for some reason this doesnt work, do a google search on your router model and you will find the info there.
You will need to "hard reset" your router. This will put it to the default factory settings.
Hold the reset button in for 30 seconds. You will then need to log on the router through the admin website:
192.168.1.1 and the login/password will be admin/admin and you'll be able to change your settings.
In regards to your first statement, the wireless router creates the wireless network. It connects to the Internet through the cable modem (or dsl) and provides an access point for wireless devices.

Try to reset your router with the small button at the back. It will come back to the factory defaults.
In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.
