NAD 7140 Have a NAD 7140 stereo receiver, about 20 years old. When unit is turned on, intermittently (every 3-6 seconds) lose sound. Sound returns for 3-6 seconds, then lost again. This is accompanied by a "soft clicking" noise within the unit. I opened up unit, unable to pinpoint source of clicking. This sympton happens regardless of source (CD, tuner)

The clicking is the sound of a bad relay. A relay is an electrical switch that opens and closes under the control of another electrical circuit. There is no user solution for this. You'll have to take it to an electronics repair shop (~$150) or dump the whole unit.
