Need to make word documents read only until they are saved as another file name and can then be altered
I have documents that I need to protect from unwanted changes as these are company templates that are .doc documents not .dotx documents. I would like other staff members to be able to save these documents to a new filename and edit accordingly. In the past we have had password protected documents but people can still open and save their own changes to the document. Please help me.

Open the document and do a "Save as" and make sure the file type is set to .DOT
That will make it a template file.
