If the tape was recorded on a machine like the Panasonics with EP mode then it must be played on a machine with this facility

Depending on your VHS player, you man have only two(2) speeds. I bough A Philco Player as a backup once.
If u want to try something, because I don't know make & model number.
Place your tape in & out (eject) a couple of times. The last IN, foward & rewind ( to the end of tape ) It won't hurt if u do it twice(2x) Then play normaly. See what happens.

Thats when the LED'S that detect the ""the tracking signal, imbedded in the tape, is not being read due to bad tape, bad tracking head/ circuit,etc. "" [I am 'Biting' ACCORDIANMAN'S words]
Try the " forward\rewind " test which MAY realign tape to VCR.

More than likely, your VCR cannot detect the speed that the tape was recorded in. Either that, or the tracking signal, imbedded in the tape, is not being read due to bad tape, bad tracking head/ circuit,etc. Open the tape cassette door and look at the top edge of the tape itself. Be sure that there are no creases there. The only other possibility is that your machine is out of alignment, but you seemed to imply that other tapes were fine...accordianman

This is automatic, as the record speed can only be manipulated, not playback unless youhave that setting which I have never seen,
