Machine was purchased 2005. Just had my first attempt to use the softener dispenser, but the diluted softener remained in its bin, plus the bleach bin was filled with water when the cyle concluded. Consulted the manual to confirm that the dispenser position and filling level are correct. This malfunction happens with the wash cycles and when 'extra rinse' is selected. When I ran 'Rinse' alone, it worked fine, both bins were empty at the end of that function.
