If you are trying to take your photos with a very fast shutter speed, this will reduce your light, especially if your aperture is is not open enough.
Im guessing you have the 18-200mm vr - try switching to manual (M) set your aperture to F5.6 and shutter speed to 1/160 ( these can be altered to suit your light conditions) .
If you are really struggling for light indoors , try raising your iso to 800 (in your camera menu) though if using the dedicated built in flash this may not be powerful enough. You may need to invest in something like the Nikon SB400/SB600 etc a good all round flash is the SB600.
Hope this helps.
Using the auto mode on the nikon should help. It will adjust the setting automatically between night mode and day mode.
