Nintendo ds lite one of the hinges is broken and cracked just along a bit. It happened yesterday thought it would be fine but every time I close it it turns off. It was never dropped so I don't know how it got like that

It could be shutting off for a number of reasons...
The most likely is that when it received the damage to the hinge it has also damaged the top screens ribbon and so when it is closed the ribbon loses its connection and this shuts it down.
If you wnted to check the ribbon you can dismantle the DS (unless you have a warranty in which case just send it off for repair) and check the ribbon for any damage.
Here is a dismantling guide i have written to help you take it apart... When you free up te top screens ribbon inspect it carefully, ideally with a magnifying glass to be thorough... if there is any damage to the ribbon then your best bet is to replace the screen (a new one can be bought from ebay for a very reasonable price). and fit it to resolve the issue.
