A bundle of wires runs from the laptop to the screen past the hinge, if the wire gets crimped you can get a short that will cause video issues. If you can wiggle the screen back and forth, bump the laptop, close the top slightly, etc. and change the display appearance, that's probably your issue. Replacing the wires is usually pretty easy but soldering them back to both the board in the system and the LCD panel could be difficult.
