If it is on TV1 you will want to verify your television is on channel 3 or 4. In some cases with the VIP receivers it may be 65 or 72 as well. I would also suggest going through the inputs on the receiver. Most tvs would list it as a "tv/video", "source", or "input". You'll also want to make sure all connections are tight and secure. At last resort you can try a hard reset by unplugging the receiver for 10 seconds.
It no picture is on TV2, you will want to confirm what channel the TV should be on by using TV1. On TV1 go to Menu then press 6-1-5 and change TV2 to the channel showing in "TV2 out".
With the fan running that is completely normal as the DVR function is always in use. It always has the capability to be paused and to use the rewind function so the fan is always cooling the hard drive.
