No power up hills
I just acquired an 87 GL wagon 1.8L 267k. It can barely accelerate and backfires when I lift off the gas pedal. It's utterly defeated by the slightest of inclines, and literally needs a push to back out of my sunken driveway. Where's my power? HELP!!

This wagon need a good going over start with plugs and wires check the timing and timing belt . check your fuel pressure and you should be ready to go if ya need additional help let me know
The engine has a compression problem.
Check if the engine is consuming water or coolant liquid.
If coolant liquid level is slowly going down as you drive then you have an head gasket problem, and that is the reason for loosing compression.
If not you will have to check caburetor settings or electronic fueling depending on the engine.
