Have you checked it's plugged in the correct location? Is the power on your speakers on? What is the model of your sound card? What is the model of your motherboard? Which Operating System version are you working with? Have you checked Device Manager for driver related issues?
in microsoft windows you want to check out the Device Manager by holding down the Windows Key (on the keyboard between the CTRL and ALT keys on the left) and pressing Pause/Break key (top right on keyboard). This should bring up device manager. This should list all your hardware devices and any pieces of hardware listed here will have driver issues if it has a yellow exclamation mark next to it. (look for your audio sound card).
