No sound. yellow (!) by audio driver in device mgr. error 10
I have an hp pavilion a6400f running Windows Vista. I have no sound, with a red x next to speaker icon in lower right. In device mgr. there is a yellow exclamation point next to my Realtek High Definition Audio. In properties it says device cannot start error 10. I have tried downloading the latest recommended driver from Realtek (Vista_R221) but it always times out. There are also no playback devices to choose from on speaker icon or in the control panel under 'sound'. Have unplugged speakers (which used to work last week) and plugged back in. Vista doesn't recognize them I guess. I've been through troubleshoot tips for Vista on Microsoft website and have had no luck. I have no idea where to go from here.

Go to your device manager (windows key+break, device manager is on the left) and under "Sound, video and game controllers" will be "Realtek High Definition Audio" which has the yellow exclamation mark. Right click it and select uninstall. Reboot, and Windows should detect new hardware. If Windows doesn't automatically install the proper driver, the latest one can be downloaded from Realtek at the following link:

Sorry about the timing, their site appears to be down for maintenance at this time. It wouldn't be the first time I've had this happen when I've needed them.
This is their US site, it's currently loading for me (the Taiwan one is not):
