Try using a different set of cables. If that does not work, try an alternative input. For example, if you are using RCA plugs, try using Scart cable instead and see. If it works, it could indicate a fault with the RCA output board in your VCR. Does this only happen in the VCR, or even when you watch regular TV?
What kind of connection are you running into this vcr? Have you tried a different vcr which would test to see if it is the cables or the vcr. How long have you had this and is there any reason that you know of that might have caused this, please get back to me on this.
you probably have a loose connection in the audio circuitry within the player. check for cracked connections and follow the audio from the input. This happens on all inputs correct? Antenna, dish, videotape, etc?

yes, external wiring would be ok, have you tried a cleaning tape in the machine at all, you can buy this at any basic electronics store or Best Buy, Circuit City, or even Walmart

Does this occur with all VCR cassettes? It could be specific to the cassette you were trying..
It looks like an internal audio problem with the VCR. You may want to get it serviced (or replaced if under warranty)..

Double check your connections especially scart ones. make sure no pins are bent or touching.
