Noisy Fuel Pump?
Hi I'm writing from Australia and have a 1993 Audi 80 - 2.3. I believe the vehicle was assembled late December 1992.

There is a noise from the rear - fuel tank area while the engine is running - can be described as a whirring sound but is a bit more. A Mercedes mechanic suggested there might be a fuel pump in the rear, at the tank, to maintain fuel pressure for the injection system (?) and that it would sound like that if it was worn.

I've not owned a vehicle with fuel injection before and as I cannot locate a workshop manual for my model (apparently Audi over here don't release them to the public - how pathetic is that?) have no idea where to start.

Can anyone please offer some real advice. If it is a fuel pump is that something a home mechanic can replace or is it a more specialised job suited to an Audi workshop?

Thanks (in anticipation) for any input.
