Start checking the transmission fluid level, and eventually top up the fluid.
If you have noise from the gearbox, check first the transmission fluid level.
Even if the level is to the top youi may need to replace the fluid in full to get rid of the metal dust residual dissolved in the transmission fluid.
If your peugeot is over 80K miles (about 100K Km), and the gearbox had become noisy, then the gearbox will need a rebuild (taking apart, cleaning bearings and rebuild), ask your mechanic a quote for gearbox rebuild.
Scratching gear noise can also be caused by a faulty clutch, in this case you check the clutch, eventually fix clutch cable or replace the whole disk , depending on a circumstances.
Finally, a bad driveshaft bearing can also generate noise when you shift gears. In this case you usually notice also an abnormal vibration on the driveshaft.
