Norton Internet Security 2008 installation problem
Hello,
I am trying to install Norton Internet Security 2008. When I was first installing this product(which I bought a CD from a store), my computer battery drained away (after I entered the product code) and it shut off my computer. After I restarted and tried installing, I got an error saying "Unable to start setup, please contact technical support for assistance:. I tried various suggestion from symantec website and tried the following.
1. Installed a Microsoft Windows Installer update for my windows xp machine. Before this, it also said to rename some of the msi components which I did (in windows/system32 directory).
2. I was having a prior Norton Anti-Virus 2006 software which I tried to remove with Norton Removal tool (which again I downloaded from symantec site). This software was running for more than an hour on my machine, which did not end.
After this, I restarted my computer and tried to install Norton Internet Security 2008, but again I got the same error.
I also purchase a second time this software through internet, doubting the software was corrupted, but again to be bad luck, with the downloaded software also I got the same error,
Could you please help me in installing this software successfully?
Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks
Vijay
I have built a new desktop with some old and new hardware. This project has led me to use windows xp x64 os. While trying to install "Norton Internet Security", which I purchased online, I found an error message that stated "this product is not compatible with this computer's operating system. For more info click the following URL." So, when you are on the hunt, you follow the trail. The URL led me to another download which ended in disappointment. As I have read in a few other posts, this is a "norton removal tool", which also doesn't work. I'm very confident that someone out there has a suggestion that will prevent me from having to spend forever on the phone or email trying to solve this problem with someone I cant possibly understand. Thanks.

Download the Windows Install clean-up utility from the Microsoft site, Install it, run it and select the Norton 2008 product and un install it. Reboot, then try your installation again. Let me know if this works, I have other suggestions if this does not work for you.
