Hi Vicky - As you don't mention the make or model I'll have to give a pretty generic reply but it should be enough as they're all pretty similar.
Plug in and switch on the printer/copier and look at the top of it. There should be a lid that covers pretty much all of the top which you can lift up.
If you try and hinge up the printer further down you may just find the part where you change the inks or free paper jams. You don't want that so make sure you're lifting just the very topmost lid part.
You will know you've got it right because underneath you should see a flat glass surface.
Place the paper you want to copy face down on the glass and be sure to close the lid again.
Now look for a switch which says COPY or something similar. Press it and see what happens. You may have to adjust the position of what you want to copy to get the print out right. Just have a few goes until you get it right. There should be a mark near the glass that tells you.
Obviously if the printer has a manual with it, this will give you more detailed info.
