You didn't say printer name but it sounds like you have seperate cartridges! Most cartriges have connection points built in for the electricity to heat ink. You might want to see if the connection on both the printer and cartridge are clean. some printers will tell you ink level! If yours tells you you have ink in the black then connection are good. your test print must be missing the black, so I have also seen where multiple head cleanings may be required to unclog inkjet cartridge ports. if not a manufacturers cartridge but refill you might want to try a new one. Did you try selecting print black only? Like you are making a copy! Sometimes HP cartridges have a small vent on top near rear that can clog use small pin to clear any vented buildup.
