Nothing comes out the expresso side. The steamer works okay, but when I turn the dial to the image of the cup, which should start the flow to the expresso filter, nothing happens except that eventually the steam starts coming out under the cap of the boiler. Nothing comes out the brewing head sieve. I took the sieve off to see if something was plugged up there, but it wasn't, and it seemed dry as a bone in there. Any ideas? I'm wondering if the mechanical switch has a problem. It was initially quite stiff. (tne machine hadn't been used since the '90s
This indicates the problem of flow meter was not working. The flow meter is located between the water tank and the pump. This is procedure how to test if flow meter is cause: Open coffee machine and pull out flow meter (do not disconnect it, just unscrew it from housing), prepare any magnet (neodimium magnet if possible), press the button to start making coffee. Coffee machine will start, then stop for a second, then start again. When it starts again put magnet close to flow meter's contacts and then move the magnet away and keep repeating that moves very fast. If coffee machine is working fine then you have to replace flow meter.

Flowmeter is a magnetic device with stops and starts the flow. here is the picture of how flowmeter looks like:--
That is why i told you to check it with anexternal magnet to see if it gets commands as explained in my previous comment. And the water tank i mentioned above in my previous comment is the alloy tank of your unit.
