If the shredder only works in reverse, this indicates a blockage somewhere. The sensor at the center of the shredding console must be engaged to activate the forward shredding process.
Clear any blockage by placing the power switch in "Auto" and pressing the "Manual Forward" button for about five seconds
The problem is that there is an interlock on the unit so that it wont work if the basket is not attached. Please locate that switch and reseat it. The ones that I have worked on come loose and the tab that pushes that switch down does not reach the switch any more. There is usually a light sensor that detects a blockage when the page is inserted. IT then tells thee motor to start. Since the motor runs in reverse without that. The problem is either in the switch that you found OR the light sensor is loose or bad. IF it was the light itself that was out then it would run all the time. HOld the reverse button down and take the unit off the basket. If it stops then the switch on the basket sensor is okayThe only other thing that you could do is take the unit apart and see if there is a relay or loose wire in the circuit.
It would probably be easier to jumper the sensor switch, or spray it with contact cleaner. I fixed one of these one time, and it was paper buildup that was the problem. If the switch closes when activated, just jumper the contacts on the switch- it's the same effect as jumpering them on the circuit board, but a lot easier. You can always trace the wires back to the board, and jumper them if access to the switch contacts is too difficult. Good luck, and hope this helps.
I have a Staples SPL-1506 shredder, but I think it's the same. The optical sensor comes off the circuit board at 4 pin connector. Two wires go to a sensor on one side of the paper slot and two go to a detector on the other side. By unplugging the 4 pin connector the shredder will run continuously when turned on and in auto mode. I was fooled by the overload/bin full light coming on but that turned out to be a problem with the mechanical basket "in place" switch. If and when I get that light coming on I reseat the basket til the light goes out. I can now shred paper continuously without the stupid sensor stopping the shreder.I have a Staples SPL-1506 shredder, but I think it's the same. You can take the machine apart by removing 7 screws around the motor housing. The last screw is deep inside and hard to see. I have heard from people that the plastic bar that holds the sensor switch arm can be broken. If you can find the broken part and glue it back on, it will run fine if that's the problem.
Here is Staples customer service webpage if you need to find parts for it: http://www.staples.com/sbd/content/help/contact/index.html?cm_sp=merchandising-_-customer%20service%20tab-_-contact%20us
Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a 4 thumbs up. Thanks,
I don't know how you would jumper the PCB board. The best I can say is to call Staples customer service and have them send you a new board.
Sorry,
