You haven't disengaged the knob properly. Did you keep the hand wheel from turning with one hand when you turned the knob towards you? It takes a bit of effort to keep the hand wheel from turning. Warning: do not over-tighten the stop release knob when you return to the sewing mode. You want it tight enough to engage the hand wheel with the needle bar mechanism. However, you don't want to damage the unit.
