Looking at the manual, looks like you start with "SET" you set the time, distance or calorie target of your workout, with the panel in STOP mode. Then once you start your workout, you can then press, the "MODE" button to "SCAN" all functions as you workout. Once the target is met you will here a beep and you can then press "RECOVER" to start your cool down to check your fitness level.
