or is it worth it (an appliance repairman estimated I am looking at a minimum 500$ cost for him to come here and fix the apparent problem since I am 30 miles from the city)?
Refrigerators - Frigidaire - FRS23R4A Side by Side Refrigerator
Hi Sylvia - If your fridge is over 5 years old, replace it. The new ones are so much more inexpensive to operate that they pay for themselves in 2-3 years. Do not put 500 into a repair...........not worth it I assure you. Joe
I assume the compressor is running but is not warm or hot. The evaporator coils near the compressor should be warm and the evaporator fan in the same area should be running when the compressor runs. If the compressor is running it is not in defrost mode since everything shuts down during defrost. With the compressor running but the coils room temp, there is a problem with the compressor either low on freon or the compressor isn't pumping. Either way the repair requires a qualified tech to find a leak or replace the compressor. If this doesn't cover your problem replay again and I'll proceed with more diagnoses. For more info I need your model number also. It's Behind the lower toe kick-plate, Behind the lower crisper drawer, On the face frame of the refrigerator body, Inside the refrigerator of freezer on the left or right side wall.
I can't be sure without seeing it but you can use a voltmeter. One will be energized and one won't. With an ohm meter the two would show continuity with the control turned as cold as it will go and not when turned off. You can tell if it's working like this but not necessarily what your problem is.

I can't be sure without being there but it seems you are not getting power to the relay and the control is the next in line. You can get a voltmeter/ohmmeter combo for 10 dollars or less if you want to learn. Sorry, that's all I've got.
