Connect the external drive. Open 'My Computer'. One of the icons should be associated with the external drive. Double-click the icon to "open" the external drive, to show the files/folders on the drive.

You might have a computer-virus on your computer that is interfering with Windows. Or, it might be some "non-virus" software (toolbar or anti-virus software) that is misbehaving.
