Remove the roller assembly and clean/oil (3-1 oil or similar) the end bearings which are usually jammed with string, thread, and hair. Check the belt for burning or other damage, assemble the belt over the roller and motor shaft, then install the roller into the base making sure to twist the belt if required. Look for a guide diagram cast into the base. Hope this helps!
Sounds like the roller is jammed up. The motor keeps driving the belt, but for some reason the belt cant drive the roller. The smoke is coming from the belt, Clean the junk out from the roller.
