----- Original Message ----- From: Shane Dillow To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, August 23, 2008 10:10 PM Subject: S reg Auto gear box fault Hello My name is Shane and i own a 2 litre auto Scenic on an S reg. I work in a police garage that is equiped with all the latest diagnostic equipment but i have a gear box fault on my 2litre monaco scenic auto at home and haven't been able to get the vehicle to my place of work due to the gear box only engaging drive for 30seconds to a minute at a time . you have to then leave the engine switched off for a lest 15 minutes then it wil engage again for the short time. I changed the gear box oil (putting in 4liters of dextron2) and have used a spray can auto box cleaning fluid .The Renault dealer we (at work ) have a parts account with have sent me a parts diagraim of the electronic's of the gear box but the service department and Renault uk will not give me a list of fault codes or any help on solving my problem .. I have had a word with the work shop and the think it could be a solniod problem - but as i can not get launch home to use on it as the work shop is open 24hrs. Can you please help or point me in the right direction please . I have space to take the box the part ,but it is still in the car - some body at work side it could be just the filter causing the problem as the oil isn't traveling through freely but this does not sound right. Yours most thankfully Shane Dillow
Cause for the fault may depend if vehicle is automatic or manual.
On both manual and auto:
Transmission fluid check is also a basic maintenance that should beperformed whenever you have problems with trans, even if fromdescription it does not look as a problem with transmission fluid. If fluid is ok, usually if transmission fluid is ok, then it is the transmission gears defective, and they do not synchronize well anymore. In this case you replace whole transmission box. Transmission new replacement is quite expensive, better finding an used one.
On auto:
Often this kind of problems on autiomatic transmission vehicles are caused from faulty throttle positionsensor, you find out by connecting a code reader to your car computer. throttle position sensor tells to your transmission control module howyou are using the throttle, so that the car automatic transmission canshift to right gear, when this is faulty often you have transmissionfaults related to engine rpms and temperature, this can explain a transproblem happening only when engine is hot. In some case it is not the sensor, but the computer module controlling transmission that is faulty. To find out cause for the problem you need to connect a code reader to transmission module and to main computer module (ECU). The code reader will return fault codes that allow to locate the problem. this kind of job can be done at any qualified garage.
The TPS is usually placed behind throttle pedal, or inside the engine, depending on the model. A basic code reader (scanner only , no check onfiel volume/pressure and engine performance) can be purchased at a goodcar part shop for about $250. If you want to DIY, ar at least to dothe diagnostic, depending on what the fault is.
you will need a servicemanual for your vehicle, Try the Haynes manual .
Yes a plugged filter can cause this problem. and that is why it will work for a short time. (until it sucks up debris and plugs again) drop the pan there will be some materal in the pan but not alot. if there is alot its a sign there may be bigger problems
i have done this many times and cured the problem. when you changed the oil was it very dark? let me know if i can help any more might be able to get a parts diagram
the immobilizer system on a Renault only kills the ignition and wont start. please dont give answers if you have no idea what is going on this has been a problem on this site. idiots giving advice on somthing and are just guessing. no answer is better than a bad answer.causing the customer undue stress. auto repair problems are confusing even with good advice. this also goes for you jigsaw007 (i see they were talking about you in the forums about this problem your walking a thin line)
sorry sir this i just needed to be said. and good luck with your fix.
