There are several things that can go wrong and cause noise and/or smoke.
Knowing what the noise sounded like or how the smoke smelled would give a clue but the only way to discover the true cause would be to remove the top or back panel and take a look.

There is not much to service on most washing machines - certainly not in the short time an engineer usually takes when he visits. A service amounts to a visual safety inspection more than actually carrying out any maintenance. These days it is likely to begin by plugging in the laptop to discover what sort of usage the machine has had since the last time and how many times it has been overloaded and so forth and if the brain has logged any faults.

The engineer should then check the suspension for security and condition, the condition of the visible hoses and seals, the belt, the security and adjustment of the motor and probably the amount of wear left on the motor brushes and the security of the wiring and so forth. He would finish by inspecting the filter(s)/traps and cleaning them and running briefly through the programmes and listening to the bearings.

If the service didn't reveal the need for extra work it would take a competent engineer about an hour to do including drinking his coffee.
If the service was competently carried out the machine should have been good for around six months of hard work without forseeable problems.

Having anything serviced properly vastly reduces the chances of a breakdown but doesn't eliminate the chances entirely. I guess what you are asking is could the engineer have possibly made a contribution to the breakdown?
Good white appliance engineers aren't as common as mediocre and bad engineers but even good ones are capable of not getting things right sometimes, especially as companies tend not to be overstaffed and the chances are his boss wanted him somewhere else a couple of hours before he even reached you...
