PCX2600 cable modem Comcast problems
We have a PCX2600 and Comcast cable service. We just got home from vacation (during which we'd unplugged everything except the coaxial cable), and now our cable internet service only works intermittently. Every so often, without warning, the "Cable" light on the modem starts flashing, at which point internet access no longer works. It typically remains inaccessible for 10-30 minutes, and then suddenly resumes. The inaccessibility also happens when we try to open certain high-bandwidth websites (especially Facebook); in fact, this is how I first discovered the problem. Every time I tried to log in to Facebook, my internet access went away.
Comcast did a remote test of my modem and said it's fine, but they also say they're not having any connectivity issues in our area. Of course, they offered to send out a tech, but I suspect they would try to sell us one of their modems whether or not ours was ok... Could my modem be shot? Might it be repairable?

Do this: disconnect the power and coaxial cables from the modem.
Check all coax connections leading to this modem and make sure they are tight and make sure there aren't any unneeded splitters.
Reconnect the coax to the modem tightly (finger tight only though) and then connect the power cord.
Now run a ping test on the modem...you can also have Comcast tech support run a ping test and check for packet loss/latency. If this does not resolve the problem then you should probably have a tech come out.
Hi,
Thanks.
If you buy the new modem, make sure that you can return it if that's not the problem. Also, explain to Comcast what the problem is and that it happens on both computers. It could be a poor connection on the cable wire that goes into your home.
I had a similar problem and my DSL and Verizon found that the squirrels found my telephone wire rather tasty and ate through most of it..thus causing the bad connection.
Good Luck,
Hank
