The most common problem would be the thermocouple is bad. The thermocouple sends a small current from the pillot light to the safety shut off valve. When it goes bad, the valve doesn't receive a signal, so it shuts the valve and keeps the heater from leaking gas into the room. The thermocouple is easy to change. It is the little copper wire you see that runs from the pilot light assembly to the valev housing. It just unscrews. I would take it with you to the parts store, because they come in different lenghts. Hope this helps...
Sounds like you need a new thermocouple. It is the copper tube that is screwed into the gas valve and goes into the pilot assembly. You can get a Universal thermocouple at either a good hardware store or farm center.
