Plugging in keyboard
I have 2488 portastudio my old portastudio is a old 4 channel cassette recorder I'm lost at what I came do with my new 2488 One question I have is
on my old recorder I plugged the recorder in the headphone output jack
and used this method for my keyboard tracks on the recorder
Can this be done plugging into the h plug. Also it has a midi output on the keyboard can I just use the midi output on the keyboard and plug that directly into the midi input and direct it at any channel on the 2488 This is a new world for me I love recording I'm trying to come up to the 21 century

Proceedure to record a key board track to the 2488neo
The 2488 actually becomes your mixer and recorder. So to record your keyboard, you would take the stereo outs from the keyboard and run those into two inputs on the 2488. Then you assign those two inputs to two channel strips on the 2488 and you can play through the 2488's monitors, and then choose to record the stereo output of your keyboard as an overdub while listening to other tracks but just recording the keyboard in stereo on the two channel strips that you've assigned those inputs to.
Hope this helps.

MIDI only carries digital information, not audio. Midi is used to communicate patch settings and note value information. If you want the recording to know the note value, then you should use midi. This is useful if you want to do things like adding rythm tracks, etc.
If your keyboard has audio/line out (as opposed to headphone out), use that, as it is matched much better in impedance. If it doesn't have audio/line out, then you can use the headphone jack, but you will have to turn the attenuation way down because the headphone jack impedance is much higher. This will tend to distort on the recording if you are not careful.
The first thing to know about digital recording is that distortion is much more of a problem. I won't get into the theory of this, just know that impedance mismatching is more of a problem with digital.
