Possible power supply or ram problem
Have a Gateway 700x desktop PC that is powering down shortly after Windows XP loads. Was told to test memory. Has 512 ram (256x2), remove 1 stick and PC beeps as if no memory. Tried all configurations with memory, and same result, but with both sticks starts and shuts down. PC uses PC800 45 memory if that helps. Dont know if its a possible power supply problem or not, but the memory situation stumps me. Please help !!!!!!!

Before you tear into all that hardware stuff please first try this. Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.
Ram probably... to start with just use one RAM module.. and a hard Drive & DVD thats all... see if it boots..No... swap out RAM with know good, still NO, swap out, remove DVD, still NO, & your sure Drive is OK... Motherboard.replace motherboard... look I been doing this for ova 25 years and it still drives me nuts.. To check HD's get a Linux Live Distro, (Any, but Ubuntu is good) that way you can just use a DVD to see if works without a HD... too. Also do NOT rule out PSU, I have had wat seems like perfectly good PSU's that weren't evidenced by when a replacement was used..it worked.... sigh PC's are hard very hard...
U R too kind. Thakyou
